SSE: zero-trust workplace and Azure landing

Secure flexible working and a return to office, on a zero-trust model rather than a VPN bolted on at the end.

SSE needed the estate to move. Flexible working and a return to office could not sit on a VPN added at the end. The model was zero-trust. Direct Internet Access and PKI-as-a-service were there so Azure was actually reachable, not a slide.

The DIA work was structured to cut run cost — on the order of half — not to add another circuit. Forty to sixty people, five partners, and a smart-metering workstream that had to stay aligned with UK regulation.

This is identity, workplace and infrastructure as one landing. If operations cannot run it on Monday, you have a project, not a change that holds. RAID’s IT consultancy treats those threads as the programme, not as workstreams that report later.

The engagement ran from November 2020 to March 2024, as Business Transformation & Change.
